I have always wanted to write about Depression . I have seen many people suffering from it . A few days ago i heard a guy committed suicide because he was going through some serious issues in his relationships . He even threatened to commit suicide but nobody took him seriously . Yes ! later after his death everybody regretted for not paying attention to his threats. He was suffering from major depression . I don't want any life to be wasted like this. I don't want any of us to die like this . But it is happening all over in the world . About 300,500 million people in this world are affected by depression. of course it is a very serious disease . 15% of clinically depressed people die by suicide. Depression is a serious emotional disorder that significantly affects the development of problems in relationships with other people ,causes suffering to families and leads to loss of working ability . Everyone occasionally feels sad or depressed . It is perfectly normal to mourn because of adverse life events such as serious illness ,death in the family ,job loss or divorce. For most people these feelings of grief and sadness weak over time. However if the feelings of sadness lasts two weeks or longer ,and if a negative impact on daily activities , is likely to have something more serious than experience 'depression'. Now if you are like me and you don't want to die in depression and you don't want your loved ones to be dead because of it than you need to know the symptoms of major depression disorder .
Symptoms of major depression disorder :
- reduced self-esteem and self-evaluation
- impairment of concentration and attention.
- ideas of guilt and unworthiness (even in mild type of episode)
- black and pessimistic thoughts about the future
- ideas or actions directed towards self-injury or suicide.
- sleep disorders
- decrease in appetite.
Major Depression disorder can even cause DID,No it is not Dance India Dance! It is Dissociative Personality Disorder which is also known as Multiple Personality Disorder.
Major risk factors for Dissociative Personality Disorder (DID) :
- Previous depressive episodes if someone in the past had a depressive episodes in a greater risk that it will occur again . it is estimated that with half the people who have already had a depression episode in the same reappear . it also means that in a second half it will occur.
- Age depression is an illness that usually occurs between the ages of 25 and 50 years. but adults over 65 have greater risk of developing depression .
- Gender- twice a greater likelihood of depression in women than in men .this applies to the adult population, whereas in children there is no difference in the incidence of depression among boys and girls. several theories for this .one is that women tend to acknowledge their emotional problems and seek medical attention while men tend to recognize their problems and will try to disguise the use of alcohol ,etc .
- Marital status - for people who are divorced ,his marriage is bad or whose partner is divorced greater the likelihood of depression. The rate of depression is lower in happily married couple .
- Heritage - if there is a family history of depression, the greater will be the likelihood of same with the other members. Also is there is a family history of bipolar depression cases ,the greater the likelihood of depression in a family member.
Treatment for major depressive disorder :
- Psychology inventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) aim to change the way of thinking ,behavior and beliefs that are related to depression.
- Interpersonal therapy helps people to understand their consequences interpersonal relationships and their emotions .
- Anti- depressant medications relieve depressed feeling ,returning to normal sleep patterns and appetite , and reduce anxiety . they gradually the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain ,taking one to four weeks as their positive effects. but these should be taken in consultation with doctor.
- Lifestyle changes such as exercise and reducing harmful alcohol and other drug use, helping people to recover from depression.
- For some stronger forms of depression certainly is an effective treatment electro convulsive therapy (ECT) ,or shock treatment as it is something mistakenly called. it can save your life for people at high risk of suicide or who are over weight because of his illness stopped eating or drinking and would subsequently died .
